Martin Luther King Day: What his speech means to us.

by January 20, 2014

Martin Luther King Jr had a dream for his nation which is celebrated today in America and acknowledged around the world.

His ‘I have a dream speech’ from 1963 has been an inspiration for decades. The words have resonated with people from all backgrounds who hope for a better world. Here is one quote from that speech that resonates highly with what we believe here at GiveMeTap:

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

All Men Are Created Equal. It does not seem this way when such a small proportion of us live in wealth and health while the majority of the world’s population live in poverty. It does not seem this way, when one child is born knowing that she will go to university while on the side of the world a similar child cannot go to school as she must fetch water 10km away.

Water is a basic human right and it’s necessity is uncontested. Where we are born should not effect our access to water, but sadly, the case in the world today is that some are born knowing that lack of clean water will be the reason for their ill health and poverty. We’re hoping to correct this problem. We’re striving to make this resource available to everyone. Most of all, we’re hoping to make this world a more equal place.

To inspire you on this day, here is Martin Luther King’s speech, 51 years on.
